A word on names
You don't need a clever name. You need a name customers remember, a domain that's available, and a Google Business Profile under that name. The best trade names are usually boring - your surname + what you do, your town + what you do, or both.
Enter your name, your town, or both. We'll generate up to 24 name ideas with domain checks on each.
The four name patterns that work for UK trades
Owner-led:“Marshall Plumbing”, “K. Smith Electrical”, “Davies & Sons Builders”. Sounds personal, sounds long-established, works on a van. Best for sole traders building a reputation.
Town-led:“Leeds Sparks”, “Sheffield Gardens”, “Manchester Roofing Co.”. Tells the customer where you work in the business name. Helps with local SEO too, because Google reads the town in the name.
Descriptive:“Reliable Plumbing”, “On-Call Electrical”. Less local, more about the promise. Works for emergency services and trades where speed or reliability is the differentiator.
Combined:“Reliable Leeds Roofing”, “Marshall & Sons Sheffield Plumbing”. Long, but ranks for two queries (the trade, the town) and tells the customer everything they need to know in one line.
What to do once you've picked one
- Check Companies House.Even if you're trading as a sole trader, you don't want a Ltd company with the same name in the same area - it confuses customers and Google.
- Grab the .co.uk domain.About £8-£12/year at most registrars. Don't over-think this step.
- Create the Google Business Profile under the exact same name. Word-for-word, including punctuation. This is your single biggest source of customers.
- Build the website. Same name, same domain, same Google profile, all matching. We do this for £20/month.
- Add the schema. Use our schema generator or let us add it as part of your Seenely site.
Don't agonise over the name. The plumber called “K. Smith Plumbing” with 80 reviews wins every job over the plumber called “HydroFlowMax Solutions” with 4 reviews. Pick something boring and clear, get the website right, ask every customer for a review. That's the whole playbook.
Stop putting it off.
